desert riding is nuts.... especially at speed. you should get a XR650 or something and just have at it! 
imo, michigan is one of the best moto areas around. tons of tracks, and as long as you like whoops and sand, one of the biggest trail networks in the US (the CCC trails). i've ridden and owned damm near every 250 motocross bike. i refuse to get a thumper! (probably b/c i'm too lazy to learn how to work on them  )
