I have used Mobil 1 for years in all of my modified vehicals....on the ones i have had the chance to tear down, i saw almost no wear on the motor...bearings, pistonwalls, cranks, rods, cams....And the inside was clean (oil changes ever 3 months or 4000 miles).

The reason i stick with it is becasue the proof above is good enough for me. Im not saying Royal Purple is not good...all im saying is that im sticking with what has worked for me...And thats way im suggesting people to using it...Mobil 1 has personaly, made me a believer in there product.

And until just the last year, Mobil 1 was only a synthetic blend. The problem with a synthetic blend is the difficulty in controlling the base stock and producing a reliable oil that has consistent performance.. But hey, that was better than some others I can think of..

Yeah, still good enough to outperform amsoil in a controlled test. Amsoil's up to the visosity of a 40 wt (almost 50!!) with a 16% drop in avg fuel economy.

"We've noted about about a 17% drop in fuel economy and we're curious to see whether we pick that back up with the next brand of oil.

The results continued Amsoil's trend of excellent contamination control -- wear metals are low, insolubles are still under control (remember, by this time Mobil 1 got its oil filter changed from too many insolubles), if only viscosity weren't so high! This stuff, which says 5W30 on the bottle, is now a middle 40 and is oozing its way toward 50! Bad news for engines that prefer thinner oil. Any connection to the fuel economy drop?"

Results for insoluables may be confounded as mobil 1 was in during the break in period:

"Frankly, with the viscosity/TBN issues, we are suspicious that Amsoil's wear metals are simply a byproduct of an older engine. A re-test with Mobil 1 is probably in order."

I guess you need to define your terms. From what I understand Mobil 1 has always been a full synthetic. Originally it was full group IV PAO and later became a blend of group IV and group V which it still is today.

If you use Castrol's definition of synthetic, the newest Mobil conventional oil would qualify, both use full group III base stocks.

Well John, based upon my course in lubricants, sythetic base oil Categories are group III with Sulfur <=0.03% and Saturates >=90%; all PAOs (Polyalphaolefins); and Group V.

I'll research my Mobil 1 info and get back to you. I do remember a change in the product that they did to upgrade from (I believe) a blend to a full synthetic, but for the life of me I don't remember what it was.. a senior moment..

Good show Scott.

Seems to me I remember someone was always saying they'd stay away from AMSOil because of the tremendous amount of VI's they add.

Then there are these tests implying the same thing...

Mobil 1 synthetic oil was launched in Europe and Japan in 1973, and in North America a year later. (Two years after AMSOIL oil received API-rating for the FIRST SYNTHETIC OIL). Initially available only in an SAE 5W-20 viscosity grade, the Mobil 1 line expanded during the next decade.

In 1992, a new formula was introduced that improved high-temperature engine protection. Advanced Formula Mobil 1 was launched in 1996, with improved anti-wear performance and lower phosphorous levels to increase the life of the catalytic converters that were fitted to every car in the North American market.

The evolution of Mobil 1 continued with the introduction of Mobil 1 Tri-Syntheticââ??¢ Formula in 1999. Tri-Syntheticââ??¢ combined three high-performance synthetic fluids with a package of performance additives.

In 2002, Mobil 1 with SuperSynââ??¢ is introduced. With a combination of high-performance fluids, plus the SuperSynââ??¢ anti-wear system. (This is the point where it was being referred to as a true or 100% synthetic by folks in the industry.. I still haven't found a valid reason for that comment, unless untill that time it was really a blend?) )
