Got my Tour back from the transmission shop yesterday

350.00 used transmission
312.00 Labor to install and transmission fluid
-----------
672.00 + Tax

Guess its thats not too bad. Low income here, or else I would have gotten one from Ford with a 3/36,000 Warrenty.

Transmission came out a 97' with 112,000 on it. Car had a blown head. Guy was going to fix car, but some kids came and smashed the windows and the rain ruined the interior.

I have a few questions to ask.

Did every 1997 Contour 4-cyl come with Overdrive? I am asking because the shifter has a O/D button and I looked under the shifter on the console and see the wires cut from the O/D. Does it hurt to leave it like this? Or should I have my transmission man fix it?

I also wanted to mention that my transmission bit the dust about 4 months after it had been to one of the oil change places and had the "power flush" done to it. I am gonna do the 4 quart "drain and fill" every 10-12K or so from now on.

Thanks
Lloyd

Yes! All ATX Contours came with O/D. Seems like what happened was, for some reason, they removed the shifter inside the car. To do this, you have to "break" the wires in the shifter arm, which lead to the O/D Switch. You can remove the handle yourself and reconnect the wires.

As for me, what would I do... Well, if they were removed the shifter to install the tranny, I wouldn't want them to try and fix it. There is no reason to remove the shifter, to install the tranny.

Then again, they could be covering up for something. Somthing like, the O/D not working or whatever. Either way, I would try to reconnect it myself, if not, then you will have to take it back to them.

No.

It was like that before replacement of this new transmission. And I also noticed that when I goto to start my car everytime, the O/D light has never came on either.

What's wrong? Burned out bulb?

Oh! Sorry...

I would still reconnect the wires.

As for the O/D Light, it should only come on when you turn overdrive off. That is done by way of the switch, which is not connected. By default, overdrive is turned on at each start-up. During this time, the O/D Light with no be lite.
