hi , get Michelin Nordic Ice Trak's. I am going into my 5th winter with these and they are awesome. Very good on ice and in slush as well as snow. I have left a lot of cars behind with these tires and not afraid to venture anywhere.Canadian tire sells them , I think they are around $100-120, but get four for altimate traction. good luck

Thanks to everyone who replied - much appreciated. For those who mentioned sticking with 15" tires, I wish I could. The 15's don't clear the brakes on the SVT Focus.
I got a price from Deals 4 Wheels in Ottawa on some 205/55/16 snows - Semperit Ice Grip 2's at $99 each installed and balanced.
I couldn't find much of anything on the internet about these tires other than some old Euro reviews. My understanding is that they are old-stock/overstock Euro tires. I might check them out - hopefully the sidewall has the same cryptic info on Euro tires as North American ones so that I can figure out what month & year they were manufactured - don't want to buy 3 or 4 year old "new" tires that have been sitting in a warehouse somewhere drying out.
Now, the Nordic Ice Tracks at Canadian Tire. Store brand, but are they really made by Michelin?? If so, then maybe worth a look.
Right now, I'm on the fence between aggressively trying to seek out some gently used snows and buying a set of my old standbys - BF Goodrich Winter Slaloms. I've had them on 2 of my previous cars and have always been impressed with their capabilities in moderate to deep snow.
Basically, anything is better than ContiSport Contacts come November, and thankfully I still have a little while to figure out what to do!
Thanks again!
P.S. Phil - when you got your hands on my old 15" BFG snows, they had about 18 or 19K on them, winter of 2001-02 and 2002-03. If you only put 5K on them last year, they should be good for at least one more winter.

I'm pretty sure they're Michelin's top of the line from about 2002 and, guessing here, I'd say they have no more than 4 or 5k on them - my wife does no more than 10k a year.
If anyone's interested I will dig them out and get the exact model name and I can take tread depth of you want.
If you're interested they are available as a set of 4 and for 30% of what I paid which was $100 each.
And at this point I guess somebody will tell me if I should have put this in the classified forum - but hey, he started it right? ;-)
PM sent at 4:40pm today re: the 205/50/16's for sale.

For what it's worth, I had the CT store brand model (Ice Trac?) a few years ago on my 300ZX and they sereved the purpose. If they are made by Michelin, I'd be shocked.

Phil, Ray,
How about breakfast tomorrow (Sat) AM. Just a Tim Hortons thing or something. It'd be nice to catch up and discuss the tire strategy in person...

Wish I could -- heading out of town tonight. Ray, you're missing the opportunity to try to sell me your Focus in person!

First $17K takes it. I'm free next weekend, so perhaps I can sweet talk either one of you, Phil, or Harry into a sharp deal on a sporty hatchback...

Harry - care to divulge what the new mystery car is on line? I'll be calling you soon either way, but I must say that I am very curious. Perhaps you scored a lease on an '04 Aveo?

I am in town this (Oct 30) weekend too. Shannon is travelling, and will be leaving again on Sunday morning, so I will be free after that. On the Saturday, if we're just getting together for a coffee, and there's a Starbucks involved, she'll come along.
I won't have the SVT though. I left it at the cottage and drove my dad's 88 Country Squire wagon back last night. You boys wanna see the "Shaggin' Wagon?"
