Fuses are cheap.. but don't cause an overheating condition..
The tests for waterpump and/or thermostat failure are as follows:
1. Overheating, or rising temp guage. (not always pegged, though most times it is)
2. Check for heat from vents:
If none go to WP troubleshooting
If heat go to Thermo troubleshooting
3. Check for coolant in tank
4. Check for obvious busted hoses, or clamps.
5. If no hoses are found, Replace the thermo, or WP, depending on condition met in step 2.
Looks to me like you have already seen all the steps for yourself.
Now to buy a WP.
