Point made, but let me clarify:
I was just stating that the general American idea of visiting a Dr. is "I've got something wrong, prescribe me something that will fix me." Granted, it's getting better and better, but responsibility for oneself and one's health should IMO be a huge priority. It's all too common to see one's health handed over to a Dr., when all he/she can really do is get you on track. He/she can't force meds down your throat.

As far as comparing countries, I haven't lived anywhere else, and all the data I stated was presented to me in class, in talks (grand rounds), and in discussion. I know our system works, but I don't think anyone will disagree that it could use some improvement.

The tax payers would be paying for drugs for drug addicts if we had national health care.

1 ER visit of uninsured person (who could be seen for his/her ailment outside of the ER, but doesn't have insurance or his/her Dr. doesn't take Medicaid anymore...) easily costs 10 times more than this drug addict's pills. I'm not trying to downplay the seriousness of the problem you pose, I'm just saying that there are bigger problems to worry about.
