If you don't include a flex pipe up near the front, i.e. directly behind the cat you will almost certainly crack your headers in a short time. Tranversely mounted engine in FWD cars tend to rock back and forth a LOT. Without the flex pipe this twist has nowhere to go so eventually welds, which tend to be the most brittle and therefore less forgiving part of the header, crack. So spend the $40 on a new flexpipe when you install your custom exhaust or whatever and avoid a headache and wreck headers in the long run.
