Update for you, guys.
I did the screwdriver thing with the wires (don't have a timing light). I used a bare piece of the frame and- no spark. I tried cylinders 5 and 6, and nothing.
The ground strap is firmly attached to the coil pack. The pack itself was okay before I took it out. (I promise I'm never gonna touch the engine again, honest, guys!)

Fuse 4 in the box next to the battery is fine. One other thing, which I didn't mention is that I was going to try to replace the bank 1 HEGO yesterday (hence the reason the coil pack was off in the first place). I still couldn't get to it, though I could get a sensor wrench on to it. Anyway, decided not to do it in the end, and reattached the sensor plug. But...
The car had some work done to replace the flywheel ring gear recently. and I noticed that they seemed to break a few things down there. (Looked like a black box with big spade connectors was originally attached to the hard wiring harness that runs across the manifold was broken off and is sitting loose.)
Really need help diagnosing the electrical problem. I rewired my house, and know how to use a multimeter, but Don't know auto electrics too well, and I'm not sure on the car where I should put the probes. I do have a Haynes manual, but it's not too good at sorting the diagnostic. Everything I want to do says 'take to the dealer to have serviced/diagnosed.'
Please, please help with some ABC's on diagnosing this problem myself.
Thanks all,
Tim
