What's the best way to do this? Are you talking about the plug that's on the top of the coil pack? If so, how do I do this? I have a helper to turn the ignition, and a multimeter.
Exact instructions would be greatly appreciated. (I've had a jolt from High Tension wires in the past, and I don't want another!)
Cheers, T

Update for you, guys. I did the screwdriver thing with the wires (don't have a timing light). I used a bare piece of the frame and- no spark. I tried cylinders 5 and 6, and nothing. The ground strap is firmly attached to the coil pack. The pack itself was okay before I took it out. (I promise I'm never gonna touch the engine again, honest, guys!) Fuse 4 in the box next to the battery is fine. One other thing, which I didn't mention is that I was going to try to replace the bank 1 HEGO yesterday (hence the reason the coil pack was off in the first place). I still couldn't get to it, though I could get a sensor wrench on to it. Anyway, decided not to do it in the end, and reattached the sensor plug. But... The car had some work done to replace the flywheel ring gear recently. and I noticed that they seemed to break a few things down there. (Looked like a black box with big spade connectors was originally attached to the hard wiring harness that runs across the manifold was broken off and is sitting loose.) Really need help diagnosing the electrical problem. I rewired my house, and know how to use a multimeter, but Don't know auto electrics too well, and I'm not sure on the car where I should put the probes. I do have a Haynes manual, but it's not too good at sorting the diagnostic. Everything I want to do says 'take to the dealer to have serviced/diagnosed.' Please, please help with some ABC's on diagnosing this problem myself. Thanks all, Tim

Have you tried going back to the stock wires?? Just a thought... Try checking all connections around the coil pack.
As for the PCV, I would think that it would still start up, but might run weird if it was connected improperly.
Now you said it tries to start but doesn't right? Does it just turn over and act like there is no spark, or does it try to start, but just die off?

By stock, do you mean the original wires? The new ones are 'stock', new from Ford at C$115.
Either way, there's no spark. The engine turns, and turns, and turns. No slowing, but not even a cough or a sputter.

If you are not getting a spark from 5 and 6 odds are the new Coil is bad. I've had many parts go bad out of the box from AutoZone.

Sorry, I wan't clear. The coil is the original, there was nothing wrong with it AFAIK. What I meant by testing 5 and 6 for spark was that I didn't just use one wire to test for spark, in case there was something wrong with that. By testing at least 2 wires, from different coil groups, I was sure that there was no spark at all. I could test 4 or 1, the final coil group, but dollars to donuts there is no spark there either. I suspect now (but what do I know, I turned a working car into an 'as is special' ) that there is a fault with power getting to the coil pack in the first place.

Okay.. when you removed the coil pack, maybe you didn't put something back on right or a wire came lose? It's also possible that you killed the coil pack when removing it, did you use a metric hammer? J/K

??? What's a metric hammer? It that like a Manchester screwdriver (a hammer?) or a Glasgow kiss (a head butt)?

There's 2 ground wires on the coil pack. Make sure they are both connected. The other end of the one on the passenger side of the coil is near the strut tower IIRC. Maybe one of the wires in the power plug to the coil primary circuit is loose in the connector or something. Make sure the insulation around those wires is not cracked or broken. If you're not getting a spark from the secondary circuit(to the plugs), it means your getting no voltage to the primsry circuit(the connector which plugs in to the coil pack). Hopw this helps some.
