I usually put the car on ramps, and crawl underneath, on my back, with my head toward the back of the car, and my feet sticking out from under the front bumper. Then, I bend my right arm at the elbow, and extend the lower half of my arm upward, behind the tie rod. Then, leaving the lower half of my arm stationary, I bend the upper part of my arm 45 degrees toward the driver's side of the car, until it extends just behind the stabilizer, and then bend it again 30 degrees to the north, just above the lower control arm, and then bend it 45 degrees upward toward the filter, and then extend the end of my arm 60 degrees toward the front so that I can grasp the filter. Then, when the filter is loosened, I pour hot oil down my arm, across each of the five joints in my arm, until the oil accumulates in my arm pit. If the oil is very hot, I jump in pain, and slam my head into the subframe, and knock myself unconscious, and then about 20 minutes later I start all over again, this time using the left arm.
It is simpler, but not quicker, to remove the right tire.

They just don't build cars to be worked on by Shade Tree Mechanics anymore.

That's for sure. I replaced the alternator last weekend, and that task had me thinking all kind of bad thoughts about Ford engineers. On the other hand, if the alternator holds up for ten years and 140K miles, I shouldn't complain.
