Easiest way to spot a '97 is the manual gas filler door. It has the finger ridge to open it.
In episodes of "Seinfeld", a Mystique is used as George's car. One show had his car parked at the Baseball Stadium cover with papers.

there is a pre 98 contour in a movie called king cobra about an hour into the movie.

For what its worth, my 98.5 GL Sport (power everything but 2L Auto) had black mirrors and its cab-red in color. I also had a clock on it, and dual tone horn, oh well LOL! Crazy ford!

As far as the year...I'm going to have to say I'm not too sure anymore. I was under the impression that the non-colored mirrors were just on 97 models, but after looking at the FAQ again I see that it indicates black mirrors were on the '96 GL.
In Canada the colored mirrors were standard for '95 & '96 models so that's probably how I got confused.
My 96 GL Sport (teal) and a girls 95 GL plain-jane (only option was power locks, also teal) both had body colored mirrors (and zetec autos) Personally I've never seen the flat black mirrors (or didn't notice). Mine was also a rental car to begin with, so fleet vehicles is not the case.
Maybe they were on the totally basic (no power windows/locks/etc.) models...

Someone must have swapped them in... if not, that's weird. Know if it's got (or had) the duratec? Down in TX I got the fenders for my old GL off a 95 GL exactly equipped like mine, except having a V6, 5-speed, 4 wheel discs, and a tach.

they might have done it, they had a bumper sticker saying something about honorroll and then they installed power locks in the car. (ghetto looking)

How about that medium steel blue 98+ tour in dukes of hazzard?  I found that pic...on the internet, what are the odds? Anyone else catch it? It was in alot of that chase scene..kind of

They showed that car like 20 times in that drifting scene. First I was like cool, a Contour. Then just got annoying.
