Use Dawn dish soap to wash the car a couple of times. It will strip all the wax right off and save you a lot of scrubbing, then you can start fresh. Also I would recommend a clay bar to help remove the grit. Hope this helps. Thanks for the info and take it easy on the tranny for a few hundred KM.

Might have to wait until spring now though. Temp should be over 15 degrees to apply wax.

Yup...
Dawn is probably good for one round. It should feel like freshly-cleaned tupperware once you're done.
Follow with the clay bar. Don't drop it...or you'll have to get a new one.
Finish with a good three-stage wax. Meguiars is great, followed by Mothers. Laura and I are partial to Zaino Bros.
But as Mark said, it has to be above 15C for waxing to be optimal. Since you're already into late fall, it's probably a moot point. I'd consider waiting until next year

I agree about the clay bar. Could not believe how great it worked. BUT, if you can get the temperature right, a coat of wax is a great idea. Good paint protection is always a good thing. Erik

Dawn, eh?
I think it's a bit late this year to do anything significant. But, I have an awful lot of crud on the glass, which has been waxed over, probably drive through car washes that don't get off all the dirt, but lay another coat of wax over top. It's a b!tch to get off.
I could use dawn carefully on the glass I s'pose, cuz I need clear glass at least for the winter. I tried a few glass cleaners (the foaming aerosol types, and the wipes) and I'm still not happy with the glass. But, any of you guys ever used rubbing compound on your glass?
Cheers, T
BTW I may just cop out, and get it detailed when I go for my rustproofing this weekend. At least keep the car's paintwork coated with wax over winter.

Ha! You said it. Sorry dude. It's a little warmer in the daytime though. At midnight, it's cold everywhere round here! Hope your hands have thawed out.

Oh they thawed out just fine thanks.
I saw on "Trucks" last weekend where he restored alot of paint problems on a vehicle through a wet sanding and buffing process. Thinking myself to try it in the spring rather then get a respray. Anyone else interested in trying this?

I have done that to a 300zx and am doing it to my dad's old wagon. Meguiars paint cleaners (medium cut, fine cut, then swirl remover) do a great job, but you will need a buffer. And it is really made for non-clearcoat paint (although the swirl remover could be used on clear coat with no ill effects.
As the car is clear coated, you might be OK with just washing off all of the old wax and starting again. And I agree with the clay bar recommendation: The stuff works wonders!
