1984 (the end of the world). This thread is great. Its sad though. I grew up in the country. We had a derry farm literally next door. Now its a devellopement full of multi-million dollar mansions. Sometimes I still make the hour and a half drive to go see my old neighborhood (or whats left of it).

Oh BTW, my lil bro recently got a $50 citation for riding his bike w/o a helmet. WTF!!!

Man , reading when most of you were born is really making me feel OLD .

That list was pretty darn true on MY end also . We did a lot of crazy stuff growing up & survived . I've got the scars to prove it ! When you got hurt , you just learned not to do THAT again ... well , maybe one more time .

It brought back all kinds of good memories , thanks Simon !

Uhhh, kids ride bikes still??? I'm almost serious!

Can't say that this world's view of "FUN" isn't affecting me tho. Schtupid time-wasting computer/TV/Expensive recreation, isn't nearly as enjoyable as the simple things in life.

You know, this raises a good point with me.

I was in a constant battle with my Dad over watching TV. He always griped about me and my older brother wanting to watch it. "Why, we never had that when I was a kid, I don't see why," etc. We'd get home from school and watch Gilligan's Island reruns, then turn off the TV with enough "cooling time" before he got home. Then we'd rush off and get our chores done so he'd think we'd really been doing something. Fun times. I think I remember thinking that I'd never terrorize my kids that way over something as fun and normal as TV.

So, now, I find myself the father of an 8 year old kid, fighting the same battle, only now besides TV there's the darn Gamecube there, too. My fault, entirely. And it's not friggin Gilligan anymore, either, it's 8 channels of cartoons and "youth" programming 24/7. And I caught myself the other day quoting my Dad almost word for word. He's limited, and he whines about it sometimes, but it's definitely for his own good.

Thanks Dad, for showing me the light. For being tough. For pushing me beyond my limited vision. My best memories of childhood have nothing to do with TV.

As long as you let your kid watch sponge bob, he should be happy. Personally, I found as a kid that watching tv was no where near as fun as going out and doing stuff (usually getting into trouble but atleast I was outside).

I'm just trying to figure out why 1985 is the cutoff. As far as I'm concerned, it should be 1983 - the year of the last episode of the Holy Trilogy

Thankfully, from what I've seen, the kids leaving their teens now are turning out to be mostly OK, so I guess they've learned a few life lessons on their own despite their parents' attempts to screw them up

This may be true, or it may not be, but it's certainly flattering to think that way.

The sad part is that the most (or rest) of the world still lives the old way. If we accept the idea that our "tough" childhood made us what we are, what's gonna happen to this country 20 years down the line?

I look at my 10 yo and I think to myself, when I was her age I had responsibilities, I had stuff to do, you know. I dunno, we do what we can, she's kept busy, but that still does not help, she just never gonna have it the way we did. I suppose the world is changing and I'm just slowly becoming an old grump

i would have to disagree with that statement. if anything, the rest of the world is becoming more and more like America. European teenagers are always following in our footsteps. Look at China, they are actually starting to enjoy some capitalism. Much of this has been attributed to MTV which is now world-wide. They call this generation the Mtv generation (globally). Even after the Iraqi war "ended" Mtv was over there interviewing the upper class kids who were saying how much they love P Diddy and Snoop Dogg etc...

The world's kids and teenagers may do things differently but they are all evolving just the same. My mom and her friends talk about growing up in Germany and how things have changed so much now. The kids are just as commercialized and are party animales there as they are here.

look at japan where half of our stuff comes from. japanese youth have always been known for being quite, hard-working, and obediant. if you watch anything involving japanese kids of today theyre crazy party animals that are even more commercialized then us, hence so many of the toys we have to play with.
