Just got back from IRP .. wow what a blast! I drove a Ford GT for four laps at speed at IRP. All of the instructors were given the opportunity to take people on charity rides on track at speed. All proceeds went to the Florida hurricane relief fund. The car is so intimidating to drive. It understeers too much and is very cramped to sit in especially with a helmet on. The brakes feel like someone dropped an anchor out the back and the acceleration is like nothing i have ever experienced! I hit over 135MPH on the track. I was so glad i did not scratch it! The car survived the two days of charity rides unscathed. Two other cars were wrecked with one being a complete right off. He went off track at 100MPH and hit a tire wall and then flipped over twice. He was OK. My students were very cautious after that incident. Was a blast and am very tired now. Here are some pics of me in the GT. Cheers Fern

I wish I could have been there. My weekend pretty much sucked. Found out the my barke calipers are finally starting to leak (these were ones I put on the car just before Dunville) and then the flu I have been fighting all week finally hit hard today and I didn't even make it out to Shannonville. I still may go to Mosport on Friday but with the crap tires I have now and the colder temps it could be a very scary experience.
Hopefully if all things go well this winter with my business I'll be able to pick up a tow vehicle so that I can hit up some of the US events with my 3L that should be done by then.

From what I understand the GT wasn't wecked but two people wrecked their own cars. Sounds like you had fun, once in a lifetime opportunity . I'm surprised you only hit 135, you must have been holding it back.

The straights aren't big enough to go much faster.

The two wrecked cars were Cobras. The people who wrecked the cars were the owners. The instructors were told to hold back and make sure nothing happened to the GT while on the track. That acceleration was in third gear only... well just upshifted to fourth. there was more straightaway to go but things happen very fast in car that wants to keep on accelerating.. so I wanted to make sure that my photo wasn't put up at Ford HQ as the one who wrecked the GT!!
Definitely the experience of a lifetime!!

Fern congrates and you are one lucky guy to get to drive that car. Since you are instructor you want to help me fine tune my driving a stage 3 6puck clutch in traffic I would really appreciate it Aaron

I have the same clutch as you and most of the time I don't bother with smoothness. I just do what I need to do.... Now if you want to practice the fine art of late apexing in order to give yourself greater overall track speed... come and see me at the next SVTOA event Fern
