The other day I noticed a knocking noise from the engine bay of my 2000 SVT contour. The noise is intermittent and happens only at idle RPMs. If I hear the knocking noise, I rev the car a bit and the noise goes away but returns once the revs go back to idle. I did some research and it looks like these cars have a lot of problems with spun bearings and a spun bearing makes a bad knocking noise. I am hoping that the knocking noise is a bad pulley since the noise is coming from that side of the engine and is intermittent and only occurs at idle. How do I tell if I have a spun bearing or have a bad pulley? The car drives fine.
Just for sheets & giggles. When you press in on the clutch does the noise go away? I doubt that's it, but my car makes a noticeable "racket" when the clutch isn't engaged at idle.
my zetec does the exact same thing (as nate's tour). Its been doing it for about 5000 miles, and nothing has come of it.

The noise has not come back since I have posted this thread. Since I have been reading some of problems with spun bearings, I guess I am a little paranoid about any new sound coming from the engine bay especially if it sounds like a knock. I do think the noise will come back since cars can't fix themselves. Can anyone confirm if there is a knocking noise caused by a spun bearing that the noise is not intermittent and gets louder at higher RPMs?
