Really? I thought I had heard once that Jo Co had one of the highest incomes-per-capita in the United States. You'd figure the cost of living would at least be proportional. Doesn't seem like what you said above is much more expensive than exotic Lincoln, NE.
It's been VERY tolerable, especially given the amount of money that floats around this area. I can't complain about consumer good prices at all. CG prices in Johnson Co. are close to what I paid in Tulsa, though housing and land is 30-40% higher here in KC (which should tell you what kind of bargain housing is in T-Town).

$500k is just ridiculous.

I wish, I'm making about 2x what I'd make back in NY (Xerox hq is in CT, but I never lived there).
SD hit the most unaffordable community in CA because the salary to house prices don't jibe. We may not be as expensive as San Jose or San Francisco, but only like 10-12% of the local population can afford a house.
I stay because in the winter I can drive 30 minutes to take the kids sledding up in the mountains, come home and Mt. Bike in 70 degree weather and then get a nice 80+ degree winter day with the Santa Ana's. Plus there are stil alot of teleco and defense jobs here, so there is no great fear over suddenly ending up jobless.
Yeah living in san jose, has it's major draw backs. Everything is a butt load more. My mom just bought a condo/townhome for 320k and it is a 2/2 with no yard and only 1050 SQ feet. she had to use some of her retirement money to get some of the down payment covered. though the weather and location is great around here. Well except we have really bad drivers

What does almost 1/2 a million dollars get for you here in San Diego you ask? A 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom 1304 sq ft single story on 7000 sq ft of land
Sorry to make you cry even more, that house where I am at would go for about $50,000 on 1+ acres of land, and I am only 30 minutes away from the north dallas cities!
Like pack said, another reason I would never move to CA!

Congrats on the house! It's such a step up you will love it, but... Damn that's INSANE!!! We have a (now) 4 year old 1700 sq ft 3br, 2.75 ba with finished basement on 1/3 acre in a top ranked school district and paid 1/4 that. (though it's worth 160's now) Yet another reason why the Republik of Kalifornia is NOT for me!

I'm with Pakrat and Demon on this one:
Kalifornia is just rediculous. If I graduate and make the average salary that a PA makes (i.e. 65K a year) I'd STILL have a hard time buying a house in CA. That just sucks.
But, you gotta love the weather and the land. It sure is a beautiful state...too bad about the concrete sprawl, though.
P.S. My brother goes to school at UCSD and lives in school-subsidized housing. He's paying ~600 a month for rent, and that's a STEAL!
Edit: Oops, almost forgot! Congrats on the new house!

>>> Like pack said, another reason I would never move to CA! <<< Is that would never or could never? Look, the prices are the way they are because for some reason, seemingly everyone wants to live here. So it's a simple matter of supply vs. demand. I was born here so that's why I'm here. If I had been born somewhere else, I'd probably still be there. However, since the majority of the high tech aerospace and computer/communications jobs are here, once diplomas are in hand, people go where these jobs are. Yes, we'ver reached the saturation point. It's crowded. Traffic sucks. There are earthquakes. We are running out of water. Apparently there are still more positive than negative attributes to this place. Karl

As long as there is a demand with buyers willing to pay, then prices continue to go up exponentiallly. At some point, however, companies will start to leave CA due to the high cost of doing business. When that happens, the housing bubble is going to burst. I happened in Texas in the 1980's and ultimately led to the savings & loan collapse. On the other hand, everyone wants to live in CA because of the lifestyle. We'll just have to wait and see.
