That Bush was NOT stuck behind a podium that came up to his chin (while Kerry was tall enough to have the podium come up to his belly) was a MAJOR improvement for Bush. This time, Bush did not look like a head mounted on a podium, contantly shown in split screen.
Both debaters were lean on specifics. No big surprise there. But as many of Bush's responses were recitations on his resolve and vision and optimism, his stay the course lines and how he'll leave it to history to judge his mistakes, still leaves him vulnerable. Neither guy got a TKO, and it seems the judges' cards don't agree on the punches thrown/landed and rounds won.
But this one has to help Bush (and a few Bush fans here) feel better about how he'll do at the next one.
Only one more for all the partisans to sweat it out through, and then the superior funds available for Bush will kick in with a TV ad blitz. There must be a few Bush ads about to roll out that are better than those now running, and Kerry will have trouble responding in kind to the new ads. Even if the legitimacy of the election in Afghanistan is contested and turns messy in a week or two, Bush is still better than 50-50 to win.
