I think I might have messed up my clutch a bit today, and hope that it wasn't anything too bad.

I was at a 4-way stop, and went to turn left when the bus that I was sure was going to stop suddenly sped up.. I got up to redline in first, and went to shift to second, and then I must have really burnt the clutch during the shift.. after that the car shuddered for a block to my driveway with a light clutch pedal.

I pumped the clutch a few times in my driveway, shut the car off for about a minute, started it back up and took it for an easy drive around the block. The shudder was gone, but the pedal was still light. The clutch didn't seem to slip any in first through third, including in second up a steep hill.

Any ideas? It's a '95 Contour LX with a V6 (and a 5-speed obviously )

how does the actual stick feel? really hard to shift into gear? if the stick's still fine, I don't think you really hurt it too bad. if the stick becomes really stiff, I think you cracked the master cylinder. this happened to me...had to replace the whole clutch assembly

It seems to shift fine, but the pedal is just really light.. starting off in first is a little different too, like i need to give it a bit more gas, but after that its fine..

The shudder the car made was really quite weird, is it possible I hit the redline in first and this caused the car to kind of shutdown? Maybe it wasn't the clutch as much as the engine? But still, the pedal feels lighter.

It's never done it before. The car has 174,000 kms, and I have no idea if the clutch has ever been replaced. I just dread that a light pedal is a sign that the something is about to go.

Why would you replace a whole clutch assembly because of a master cylinder?

So I took it for a drive tonight, and the shudder is back. It feels like the clutch isn't flat anymore or something. You don't really noticed it unless downshifting into 2nd, or taking off in 1st, when it shudders, and feels like the clutch isn't flat or something. You can feel it both in the way the car moves, and a little in the pedal..

I'm hoping that maybe if I drive it a bit it will suddenly fix itself..
