Anyone here have any fluttering sound, that sounds like a bad lifter? I am getting it around 3500rpm and up. Noise stays the same level, doesnt get louder with rpm or temp. I have no power loss etc, but when I just did an oil change my oil was low, but I am not leaking and far as I can tell not burning any. I just changed the PVC valve but that hasnt made any difference. Every once and awhile my car does this weird, off cylinder idle like its running on 5 cyl, CEL will flash on and off sometimes if its bad enough but it never stays on, then I tap the gas a couple of times and everything is fine. Could it be a hydraulic lifter be on the way out?

This does not really sound like lifters to me.

You need to check for codes. You should have one that identifies the misfiring cylinder. Check that plug for damage or fouling.

You may have some preignition making noise. The EGR passages behind the throttle body may be getting clogged.

Pull the codes first, see what they are.

I was getting what sounds like a similar noise about 6k before spinning a rod bearing. I should have replaced the bearings when the noise started. Fortunately, after I spun the bearing I purchased a new set and plastic gauged the clearance. Having done no damage to the crank or rod by sheer luck, I replaced the bearings and am having no problems 10k later

Yeah, I trashed my engine shortly after those noises.. Oh, and after the dealer replaced the lifters and tried to stick me with $600 bill, but that's besides the point. I'd have someone drop the oil pan and take a GOOD look around. There's a post somewhere I started a while ago (year+).... now I have a new/used engine.. booo

could be a spun bearing, when my second engine went i was getting the sound you are talking about around 3500RPM and up. get your codes read before you do any more damage.

It could also be the timing chain tapping the cover. There's a tensioner that is pressurized by oil that can be under-tensioning the chain, but it's essentially a cosmetic "problem" in most circumstances. My Duratec has made that sound since I got it about 25,000 miles ago. I recall Terry Haines saying that it can be fixed, but it's something that you'd want to pull the engine for, and in normal use it's not really a big deal. IIRC, you'd have to start the engine at full throttle to make the chain jump timing.
