My '98 zetec makes a strange noise when I start it. It's like I start it and right after it starts it makes this strange sort of noise.

It sounds sorta like plastic thing bouncing or something. It's like a *krk k kkkkkk* and then it stops.
As far as I know it only does it when the engine is cold.

It sounded to me like someting bouncing in the airbox or something, but I checked and it's not and since it doesn't seem to do it after the car has been warmed up I don't know what it could be.

Any ideas or thoughts?

try posting in zetec maintanence for help...honestly with the description you gave me it would be hard for me to tell you what it could be.

Check the airbox, the intake boot, and check the transmission too.

if its a clickety sound, its likely the timing belt clicking the cover. confirm this in the zetec forum. ,y 95 does it. i think it means time to change it but it'll work for a while. some guys even run with the cover off to not hear the clicking. others use washers as spacers to keep the cover off the belt

My civic has a verry similar nois when it starts up cold. Its probably valves or cams. It stops once oil gets up there but it takes a sec for it to circulate around the engine.

I checked again today and it only does is when the engine is cold. It doesn't do it when it is warm, so I would surmise that it is not the timing belt, correct?
I hope I'm right

Also it doesn't do it for very long, like 1 second of the noise right after the car starts and then all is normal. I'm planning on just ignoring it, unless someone thinks it's important. Anyone think I should do something about it?

No big deal... Add like 1/4 quart of oil and see if it stops.

Don't add oil if it's not necessary. Check your oil level when the car is real cold(morning before starting it) and ajust level. It's normal to hear that kind of noise. As someone said, it's takes a seconds before oil come to the head of engine.

The timing belt sound is very common and will not hurt a thing. The tensioner is oil fed and for a very short time it has no oil pressure when you start the car.

As soon as pressure is built up (about 2-3 seconds) the tensioner starts working and takes up the slack in the belt.

It is a common thing on the Zetec for the timing belt to slightly touch the timing belt cover and yes it can be worse cold. Ford actually sells a revised cover with more clearance to avoid this. Many have been able to space the upper cover up just a little with washers to avoid the noise. Changing the belt doesn't help.

Try taking the upper cover off for a cold start and see if the noise goes away.
