yeah what eepals says. although not all model years have the same tripod design. for example one particular early '98 SE has the bearings which can not fall off. the jury is still out as to what happened to my boot (I suppose I might've pinched it too, although it did not look like that...), but I just finished replacing it and put together a short
howto w/ pretty pictures.
to clarify what others said: the tripod has to have about two inches of travel in and out of tripod housing. you should be able to get it back in w/o a problem. may be you want to get the strut out of the knuckle to have more freedom in all directions. may be you want to remove two-piece plastic shield to get better view. if all else fails you can unclamp reusable low profile clamp (long nose 90 degrees pliers work best if you can't get special tool) you will need good grip to lock it back. you will not have to pull the axle.
as a side note, I had my share of problems w/ the control arm (4-bolt), but it was w/ the lack of vertical space: I had to lower subframe a little to get ball joint stud in. once you finish one side, the other one is easy though
