Taken from sept. 01 issue of scc. mag.
Paraphrased to reduce space here.

April '99 I introduced a prototype superchager that Garrett Research was working on called the HydraCharger. By mating a turbo's compressor to a tiny little turbine driven by high-pressure hydraulic fluid, this little device promised the efficiency of a turbo with the response of a supercharger and tunability and packaging benefits all its own.

Kapich Engineering is finishing the development work. A two-stage hydraulic pump and a prototype of Kapich's compressor are sitting under the hood of an Infiniti I30 at Jim Wolf Technology. The car is supposed to be drivable by the time this magazine hits the newsstands.

Well, is it just me or does this thing seem to have almost unlimited potential. No lag. Boost not tied directly to engine rpm. Locate compressor almost anywhere. etc.etc. eek cool

the two stage hydraulic supercharger is old news. That technology was deveolped for the aviation industry twords the end of WW2 when the piston engine was almost obsolete due to the introduction of the turbine engine.

It was widely used in high speed high altitude fighters and bombers.

They were very effective, in fact so much so that if the pilot accidentally selected high blower any lower than 10,000 feet the engine would be over boosted so much so that the cylinders would blast themselvs out of the crankcase in the succession of firing order.

I have known about the "HydraCharger" for a while now, but also new Garrett/Honeywell had been dragging their a$$ on it. Looks like they are close to being finished with the R&D. That's good news.
