I was going to try the Ford honey with XL-7 for my next change. I had Redline MTL with the old XL-3??? friction modifier last winter and I had problems. Although I understand that with the new XL-7 modifier it mixes better with synthetics and the XL-3 is for dino oil. I hope we can come to a conclusive answer on this one.

The reason you had problems with the MTL is becuase it comes with friction modifier already mixed in....By adding the additional friction modifier you put too much!!!!

Try it with no friction modifier.

Ahh so thats why my trans was making crazy sounds today probably ....cold weather....glad i read posts . Maybe i'll see if i can find some ATF+3. Tranny fluid probably needs a change anyways, never got a chance to after I bought it from the guy.

Changed the fluid yesterday. I decided to try a mix. Went with 2 qts of ATF+3 and 0.6 qts of Mobil 1 ATF. No extra FM added. So far I'm very pleased, seems to get into 2nd a bit easier, but yesterday the temps were 50+. We'll see what happens in the 30s, 20s, and teens. I'll report back my findings as it gets colder.

So you mixed a synthetic with a dino based lube?! Probably not a big deal but I wouldn't do it. Why would anyone use anything besides Redline or Mobil 1?

If you don't add the friction modifier you'll end up saying bu-bye synchros in no time! Without the XL-7 there's not enough friction for the synchros to catch properly, thus wearing them out faster as well as wearing the gears through a higher chance of grinding.

I myself went with MTL and NEVER looked back. The only other option I condone is the Ford "Honey". The Mobil 1 ATF cocktail claimed my tranny's 3rd gear synchros as well as many others CEGer's. It's just WAY too slick.

Wasn't everyone saying we have dino Mercon from the factory? There's no friction modifier in that I thought?

I also thought that ATF+3 has a high level of friction modifier in it. And considering I'm running almost a 4 to 1 ratio of ATF3 to Mobil 1, that doesn't seem too bad to me. If everyone thinks this is bad, I can dump in like 0.5 ounce of FM.

Brian

p.s. I tried Redline for a year, it's poor around freezing and horrible when it's 10 degrees outside.

ATF+3 has a very high level of friction modifier already. It works very well by itself in the MTX-75. I see no problem with this combination. It sounds like it has enough friction modifier to allow this slight mixture of Mobil 1 with it.
