I second this website, avsforum rocks for info and true "video enthusiasts" who get down into the nuts and bolts of things. I frequent this site quite a bit.

The X1 is as good an intro level front projector as you can get. It's a DLP projector, NOT an LCD projector. Check out the DLP web site for more good info on DLP technology. The X1 uses the 1st generation DLP technology chip. It's VERY important that you understand the various DLP chips available and each chip's limitations for resolution. True HDTV (high definition TV) uses a 1280 x 720 resolution. The X1's chip cannot handle this resolution as it's only an 800 x 600 graphics chip, so most of the cheaper projectors contain hardware/software to scale the images down to a mode it can handle. That said, if you're a DVD freak, most DVD's are 480i/p (interlaced/progressive) which only uses 480 lines of vertical resolution (less than 600 of the 800x600 so you're safe here), but understand that HDTV is heading toward 720p or 720 lines of resolution, progressive scan, which obviously a 600 line first gen chip cannot handle. I realize I'm getting specific here, but I'd highly recommend you do a LOT of homework before considering a front projector unit, otherwise you'll be supremely disappointed in the results.

Personally I'm planning a combo den/home theater in my basement with only one "basement" type window which I'll have the ability to completely cover, combined with a very dark maroon paint and black paint in the enclosed area for the FP (front projector). Most of the cheaper projectors sacrifice lumen output because they use a cheaper bulb than higher priced units (among other cheaper parts), so lighting, or the lack of it, is especially important. About the best 1st/2nd gen FP units are the NEC HT1000 and NECHT1100 units, though they are quite a bit pricier than the X1.

Go to Projector Central for GREAT info for the novice and good reviews on where to start. avsforum gets into the nitty gritty and may scare you away if you're just beginning with all of the tech talk.
