I posted this on NECO also but want to get input from you guys as well as to what I found out.

Ok for thoses of you who don't know, a few weeks ago the MC-NECO guys had a mod meet where we put a pressure switch on the lower manifold which would be used to turn on a little red light inside the cabin of the car whenever the secondaries butterfly would open. This switch is physical so if the IMRC box is malfunctionning I would know because the light would not come on.

Now I can tell you FOR SURE that the RPM does not control the IMRC box. I can only see RPM being used as a lower limit. I was able to rev upto 5000RPM without opening the secondaries... i could of prolly went farther but hearing the engine scream like that in second gear for that long was not fun. Essentially what i did was apply very little throttle and the engine eventually climbed to that high RPM. Now when you step on the gas the secondaries open up. I say there is a lower limit because they will never open under aprox 3100RPM. No matter how hard you step on the gas. Also while doing some hwy driving i was able to get the secondaires to open and close and open and close etc, by feathreing the gas pedal on/off and doing so just slightly, which leads me to beleive that the TPS sensor is the responsibility for the secondaries opening up. Of course my foot is not the best way to measure this, but with the same amount of throttle i could open the secondaries at 3300 just as well as at 4300 RPM.

Next up getting an autotap on the car tracking TPS, RPM, MAF and somehow tying this into WHEN the secondaries open/close based on my light.

Anyone care to chime in here?

Also wanted to add...

when you drive around and feel that little bog and think the secondaires are opening, well they aren't... i can make the bog happen and the secondaires DO NOT open up... that bog must be related to someting else

Hey Puck, glad to see you over here on CEG! For those of you that don't know, PuckPuck is a fellow motorhead that is into performance for the Duratec. One of the more eduacated people over at NECO. I have been trying to get some of the NECO guys to come over here so we can put our minds together on different topics, and to share our knowledge with them.

I can monitor the same thing with my Laptop. It can track the opening of the secondaries and plot it versus rpm, load, tps, anything the PCM sees... It's part of the enhanced manufacturers data. I have tons of comparison charts testing different things. It's addicting... laugh

The bog is due to lack of intake velocity. You are basically starving the engine before the secondaries open the short runners.

I sing the praises of pinned secondaries. This winter I'll even be testing no secondaries.

Interesting findings and well done. I've suspected the same thing, but it's nice to know for sure.

I would imagine they run off of engine duty cycle similar to my water injection, atleast in their stock form. Now with the SC & Superchip they open at a preset rpm under WOT, and it is variable when not at WOT.

DemonSVT... so what you are saying is that there is an item that i can track, log and graph in the autotap software which tells me when the secondaries open.... if so i would like to know what this option is, as i couldn't find it

Demon, I haven't figured out how to record and graph enhanced data on Alex's product. http://www.obd-2.com I know how to open and look at it. Care to give a quick primer?

What would result if the secondary butterfly were permanently pinned (not just for testing but for regular driving) or even if they were totally removed? Wouldn't it cause a drastic increase in low-end power?...or are there a lot of negative side effects to doing this?
