My brother did this with his 96 Jetta GL.. He drilled holes around the airbox with the biggest bit he could find laying around, and it gave it a nice deep growl when he punched the gas... So, would it hurt to do this to my air box? I would just drill holes in the side of it... probibly 2 or 3 of them with the biggest drill bit I have, has anybody done this before?

I think that's a stupid mod but if you really wanna to it, at least don't drill your holes above the air filter. Doing that will let air go straight to your engine without been filtered.

You can drill holes in it or you can do this:
From just looking into the engine bay with it installed, you can't really tell that there's a difference. I would only recommend doing this if you didn't have the money for a CTA (like me) and you already have or are willing to get a K&N drop-in as soon as you do the mod.

I am planning on a CTA intake from my dad for my birthday (or at least him paying for most of it). I just want to try crap with the stock intake because it sounds like junk when I push the gas down at a low RPM. my birthday is coming up in a couple of months here... its going to be a [censored] to install it with the cold weather ahead though.

The problem with modding these air intakes is that they will make your filters dirty faster and it will suck in the warm air from the engine bay.

And the CTA design is different? It's a cone filter in the engine compartment exposed to the same dirt and temperatures, and is placed in the same location as the stock intake box.

putting holes in the air box is mostly for sound, an it is a great sound at that
I put my car on the dyno at SZ04 and a few people came running over because they didn't know what was on the dyno
now that nice intake sound is backed up by the mean sounding exhaust, enough that a worked at Meinike said it sounded like the car had alot of power (broke a stud when putting a opimized y-pipe in and didn't have time to fix myself)

I'm just saying any mod of that type and those with cone filters also.
