Hello, this is my first post on this board and I come seeking help. haha! I just came into a 97 V6 contour with what appears to be Cat Converter probs. The car has 89k on it and is in pretty good condition. I understand there are several Cats on this car and dont want to replace all if I dont have to. Where should I start, at the main cat or the ones that are mounted to the collectors?

Thanks Mike

Are the Manifolds and precats usually the first thing you should replace?

Id start with the main cat. At least IMO, that is more prone to clogging than the precats.

I don't recall what the bolt pattern for the cat flange is like on a '97, but I don't think there are any "commercially available" bolt-in replacements. So you'll have to buy a new cat and take it to a muffler shop and have them weld it in. I think CTA motorsports carries cats, probably SP motorsports, and of course summitracing.com does too.

The main cat is the easy-access cat, so I'd start there. If it wasn't the problem, it's relatively cheap so it's not a huge loss.

Other idea: Ask around and see if anyone has an aftermarket ypipe and see if they'll sell you their stock ypipe's cat section.

I'm surprised no one said call Ford to see if your car falls under the emissions recall.

Good stuff. I have heard that others had experienced cat probs so I thought more people would have chimed in.

So is the main cat from the 2.5 Duratech the same as the SVT?
