It's distracting to teachers. Why? Because they said so.

Now they know how a "good school system" works.

you know, you're right. you're there to learn, not to talk to other people, or worry about what we look like. don't tell me I don't get it, I see exactly what you're saying. but I fail to see why you can't give me one good reason he should take them out. if we're just there to learn, why does it matter what he wears? like I said, 28 earrings in my ear. I can wear em, right? fits in the dress code. isn't that more distracting? 28 bright, glistening, silver earrings. hell, make them all have 4 inch dangling chains attached to them. wow, all of a sudden that stud doesn't seem so bad.

walk around naked? um, no, that promotes sex, as well as violates indecent exposure laws. what he's wearing promotes nothing bad, harms no one, and hell, if he was Indian, he could have one in his forehead. it's religious, sure, but distracting nonetheless. lock them up too. what about my friend with one arm, yet again? lock him up?

where's the reason he should take them out? I haven't heard a good one yet. and actually, you are at school to socialize. that's why you have recess in elementary school. it's part of growing socially, since you are there 1/3 of your day, 180 days a year, for at least 12 years. you expect everyone to show up, not speak a word, look forward, do their work and go home? how would we make friends? how would we know how to interact in society? that's a latent effect of school, like it or not. like I said, no one is forcing anyone to like him or his piercing, I don't like the way some people dress. or their hairstyles. or the sound of their voices. should they have to change them to suit my needs? no, it isn't hurting me, I just don't particularly like it, I deal with it and move on.

We're talking about highschool, not elementary school. Fun time is over. The fact that 75% of highschoolers don't get this yet is the main problem.

And I already mentioned a reason, as did you, distraction. Arbitration/subjectiveness is a [censored], aint it? Get used to it.

thats why im all for wearing uniforms. that way there are no issues for clothing to begin with. if i was i a high class, id be a HELL of lot more distracted by the hot chick in front of me with her thong sticking out of short shorts than the guy with nuts and bolts in his face.

"Mrs. Jones, I just can't read my book while Jimmy sits there with his eybebrow pierced."

usually schools draw the line as what might be references to illegal substances, sexual activities, gang attire, offensive or can be used as weapons. distractionous attire isn't usually on the list. if i were him, id get a cross piercing and then see what the school has to say.

is a mohawk more distracting than a tongue-ring?
are corn rolls more distracting?
what about the electrocution-looking spiky hairdos kids are wearing nowadays?

I give you a challenge to find ONE university, public or private (besides some fundamentalist religious school) that has a rule like this. i would think they would be even more concerned with people having distractions in class--especially expensive schools.

i dont know about that. ive never heard fellow faculty members complain about that. ive got a few teachers in my family, and as i mentioned, i taught for a few years. i have seen all this sh*t and it wasnt distracting.

You want to know what teachers think is distracting?? messages from the office interrupting class, constant interruptions from anyone coming in through the door, kids coming to class 20 minutes late for whatever reason, cd walkmans, sneaky eating of food in class/gum, kids who wont shut up in class and blurt out comments, kids forgetting or not doing their work or not bringing their books, kids coming to class high, falling asleep in class, absentism, etc... what theyre wearing is the least of their problems.

a "good school system" is one in which students can come in any condition and still learn what theyre supposed to, that would be a good school system.

might as well go for the school uniform too. wait, it's a public school, they can't enforce uniforms...oops

Bzzzt. Sorry. Most of the public elementary schools in the DFW area have gone to uniforms. As the generation progresses the uniform requirement will progress with them.

So, give it a few years, pretty soon all public schools will have uniform requirements. That way we can impose our will on everyone equally.

What is the reason parochial schools (& some public now) have uniforms? To make everyone EQUAL in order to promote learning & prevent ostracizing from peers...

Save this crap for when you're older (I have my fair share of piercings & tattoos, I'm not repulsed in any way, other than his age)...learn discipline & learn to respect rules. All this is doing, is setting this kid up for failure in the real world. God help him when he has to actually hold down a job or support a family thinking he can protest & get away w/ whatever he wants. He is learning nothing but rebellion. Why the heck should this school change it's rules for a newcomer? Who the he11 is he? Schools have rules for a reason. The primary function of a school is to educate, not promote animosity between students...everyone knows kids can be cruel. All students have the right to a safe, non-stressful learning environment.

Has anyone seen the movie "Bang Bang You're Dead" on Showtime lately? Maybe a little insight about kids that seem a little different & the [censored] that happens at school.

Wow, Bob tried to make a good point and you went and turned it into a pile of crap, good job.

Thats quite a moronic statement if I ever saw one. Somebody a little biased? And how can you justify such a statement?

How can you say such a thing? Is it because you live down south and it makes all schools down south better than the rest? Is it because they ban piercings? If it is either of the above reasons then your statement is garbage.

Where did you get this "fact"? Is this actual statistical data? Or is it more of pull it out your a$$ data?

Fool, Fort Meade was the school he came from, not the one he went too.

This is poor parenting in that, his mother should have gotten involved before he was put on in-school suspension. She should have contacted the administrators and found out the details.

I'm sorry but until a child is 18, they are the parents responsibility. She's showed complete and utter lack of it. We all have things we did at that age that we admit were stupid. Some life threatening others not but guidence would have been nice.

Andy W. The problem with America is stupidity. I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

I'm sure the people who get offended, distracted, disgusted or any combination thereof due to the piercings, don't mind forced Political Correctness at all.

(ok ok, reverse question can be asked too. but let's make sure we get at least this one.)
