You're kidding right? If everyone held that attitude there never would have been a civil rights movement. Not that I am in any way attempting to compare this kid to MLK but the idea is the same...sometimes you have to take a stand and fight against things that you feel to be unjust.
The difference is you volunteer to wear piercings and can easily change that. One does not volunteer to be black and cannot change that.
If we all "stood up and fought" against things that we don't like but can voluntarily do or not do, then we'd have all sorts of crap going on. I'd drive 100mph down the freeway, the next guy might carry a gun to school, the next guy might be take a stand against marijuana, the next guy.....
I'm not saying we shouldn't stand up and fight for something occassionally -- but you better be prepared for the consequences, whether it be suspension, a ticket, or jail-time. The people in the civil rights movement knew what they were up against and took a stand anyways -- often ending up beaten, in jail, or killed. But they knew what to expect and did it anyways, just as this kid did. Eventually, public approval swung their way and thigns were changed -- just as the originator of the post wanted to do with the poll.
I applaud the kid for standing up for the harmless (to others) activity that he believes in. But I also applaud the school for enforcing the rules they created and the public (by the looks of the poll) demand. If public demand changes I would expect, and applaud them then as well, for allowing the boy to wear his piercings.
