Those piercings are stupid.
That school and it's rules are stupid.
If your distracted at school by some piercings in another students face. You're stupid.
This whole thing is stupid. I don't like either side in that story. It's only a big deal because both sides decided to make a big deal about it. There is nothing unusual about those piercings anymore. I don't like them. But I don't care if anyone else has them, they pose no threat or danger. Live and let live.

I do agree, he should have to follow the school rules, but the statement above is simply idiotic.

Respectable protesting is perfectly fine (such as the use of petition or regularly giving intelligent reasons to the administration), but knowingly disobeying the rule as it stands (especially when there is such an easy way to get out of suspension: take them out!), he should be able to handle the consequences of his actions.

Mahatma Gandhi knew the rules during his peaceful protest too.

You're kidding right? If everyone held that attitude there never would have been a civil rights movement. Not that I am in any way attempting to compare this kid to MLK but the idea is the same...sometimes you have to take a stand and fight against things that you feel to be unjust. I have no kids, but if I did I'd me more angry about the fact that the state and government are more or less trying once again to tell me how to raise my children.
As far as why someone would do that to their face? Who really cares, they have a right to. Wasn't too long ago people with tattoos were treated in the same manner...it's about people's right to self expression and it is causing no one else any pain and should not be squelched...whether you agree with their form of self expression or not.

So we let this kid be expressive, so all the Gang member get to be expressive and wear gang colors? Schools have rules to ensure distractions do not occur. No hats, no backapcks, uniforms.......... all rules
We do not people to drive until they are 16 because they are no responsible enough to operate a car. We do not allow people to vote until they are 18 because theyare not responsible enough to understand the issues. We dont allow people to drink until they are 21 beacause they are no responsible enough to drink responsibly.
Do you think this kid full understands the result of his piercings later on in his life? Is this a "life" choice or a sporadic spur of the moment decision.
His poor decision is affecting him adversely now!
I started HS in '89, my school banned all hats and all lockers. No lockers meant a lower chance of drugs/guns. Inner city HS in California.

The difference is you volunteer to wear piercings and can easily change that. One does not volunteer to be black and cannot change that.
If we all "stood up and fought" against things that we don't like but can voluntarily do or not do, then we'd have all sorts of crap going on. I'd drive 100mph down the freeway, the next guy might carry a gun to school, the next guy might be take a stand against marijuana, the next guy.....
I'm not saying we shouldn't stand up and fight for something occassionally -- but you better be prepared for the consequences, whether it be suspension, a ticket, or jail-time. The people in the civil rights movement knew what they were up against and took a stand anyways -- often ending up beaten, in jail, or killed. But they knew what to expect and did it anyways, just as this kid did. Eventually, public approval swung their way and thigns were changed -- just as the originator of the post wanted to do with the poll.
I applaud the kid for standing up for the harmless (to others) activity that he believes in. But I also applaud the school for enforcing the rules they created and the public (by the looks of the poll) demand. If public demand changes I would expect, and applaud them then as well, for allowing the boy to wear his piercings.

Did you school ban english class too? Trying to read through your post reminds me of trying to debug my little brother's VBA program of syntax errors.

wtf is wrong with you? so he has a couple piercings, big deal. he likes them, who cares? like you're perfect, jacka$$, don't post if you're just going to be a punk.
So your saying that anyone why has a different opinion than you is a punk? Welcome to real life when not everyone agrees with you. I for one voted yes on the stupid web poll even though its results are of a volutary nature and therefore not of any statistical value.

What? come on now, Im gonna ask you to come to a place with the rest of us, they call this place reality.
i'm here, in reality. what can i do for you?
for the record, i voted "no." i don't see the need for young kids to mark up their bodies like that. i mean, if they do, great, whatever. make yourself look like a moron. but i'm suggesting that with a little more parental guidance, the kid would have made the right decision in the first place and not done that to himself. he could have waited until he was older and knew more about himself before doing that. just my own philosphy. i have a tattoo, but i waited until i was in college to get it. it has meaning. i still like it. if i had gotten a tattoo as a freshman in high school, i'm sure i would regret the image, size, and placement of what would have seemed like a good idea at the time.
