I had a rental Explorer last month, and it made me want one again. I had a '91 and I did actually love it and the memories it provided.
The 4L V6 is more than enough for what an Explorer will come against. The only reason I would point you towards the V8 is if you were going to do any heavy (for a smaller truck) a lot. If not, it's overkill.
If it's "clean" and you like the options, go for it
