Was your's totally dead?

I'm no expert, but from most of the posts I've seen it seems to be more common to get the soft failure of "fluttering" that can be temporaily fixed or masked by moving the box to a cooler location, and I don't really know enough about how transistors fail to even guess if it could cause that so maybe you are right.
