Mild steel is actually less prone to cracking than the stainless that a lot of places use. (IIRC, ADC uses 321 stainless which is the best kind for headers, and even less prone to cracking than mild steel)
THe big issue to watch out for with mild steel is corrosion. And this can be handled by a good ceramic coating like warmonger mentioned.
