Question?

Has anyone had to replace an SVT Solenoid? My check engine light came on and Ford tells me it is the SVT solenoid which basically controls my timing? It does feel like the car is missing at times and has been for about 2 months.

Cost with labour $1400 Canadian.

Are they trying to rip me off?

Not sure but they told me it controls my timing and is internal?

Without lube it sounds like. The only solenoid I can think of is the one on the starter. A new reman. starter is around $100. Has nothing to do with timing though.

Timing:

Cam Gears, tensioners, crank gear (not sure what to cal it)
chains.

Spark timing:
Cam sensor
Crank sensor
Coil Pack
Spark plugs
Wires

there is no "SVT Solenoid" as your mechanic calles it.

I did a 3 liter swap recently.

Go to a diffrent shop.

Don't forget PCM i.e. main computer.

The trimming is controlled by the crankshaft position sensor and the camshaft position sensor. Both of these are external and are easily changed, but generally, they work or they dont. Bad wiring to the sensors can be a cause of intermittent misfires. You need a second opinion on this, and ask the next guy for the code(s) (if any).

SVT solenoid, isnt that the thing Ford put in the contour to make it an SVT? You know 10 more HP and better handling.
Just kidding, couldnt let that one go.

Trimming???

Did you mean timing?

Also the timing is not controlled by either cam or crank sensor. Timing is 100% PCM controlled. It also uses several other inputs.

The crank sensor is used by the PCM for rpm determination and the cam sensor is only used for timing the injector pulses. (not ignition)

You are correct with the statement they are either good or bad. A wire may be intermittent though.
Either will throw a code for each specific sensor though.

Also the engine most likely won't even run with a bad crank sensor. It will technically limp along with a bad cam sensor.

2000 SVT #674 13.47 @ 102 - All Motor! It was not broke; Yet I fixed it anyway.
