I would go with the MazdaSpeed Protege if you are looking in the Focus price range. Problem is the limited production run, you can probably find one if you really want to. Sorry, I don't know much about the Focus though.

I've got ~115k miles on my zetec and it runs real good, especially considering how I drive it. I wouldn't be scared to own another zetec, as long as you care for it right.

The main problem with the FSVT is the clutch/flywheel. Not sure on the specifics, but they have a very high failure rate, some of which fail only after a few thousand miles. There is an updated replacement out now.

The FSVT is a perfectly reliable car. I've seen a few cases of flywheels taking a trip out the transmission housing but I'm pretty sure it's very very very uncommon. I'm not a fan of the variable length intake manifold, as my two stage intake on the old contour crapped out on me.

If it's in your range, I'd take it over the Protoge. Myself I'm looking at the Mazda 3.

Yeah I'm seeing two main problems people complain about for the FSVT. The first is the clutch/flywheel (which was updated.. I'm not sure if I have it, but there's a TSB about it). They're are covered under 5/100,000 drivetrain warranty (on the '04s), and supposedly they give out alot faster than that. Second problem is with the dual stage intake, but that one doesn't seem to be as prominent, and I think it was fixed for '04.

I drove a FSVT and a Mazda 3s 5-door both on normal test drives; not crazy-hard but about 10 minutes or so. The Mazda just felt so much better in the short times I had to drive. It's too bad there's not a 3-door option, but on the other hand, a 3s with the factory wing just reminds me of a shrunken RX-8.

I have about 82000 miles on my svt focus, and it's still running like a charm.

Haven't even had it a full 2 years yet, Go for it, the insurance isn't too bad, be much cheaper than your bmw.
