I second the Canon Powershot A80 camera, great pics, 4MP, good flash, no red eye, uses normal AA batteries (rechargables work well). Lense is also interchangeable if you want panoramic capabilities beyond normal 35mm lense. Stock zoom is 3x optical/11x digital if memory serves. I got a 256MB memory card along with the camera at Best Buy using their 10% off coupons that I get every now and again.
Sony makes a nice camera as well from what I've heard, as does Nikon. Avoid the cheapie Gateway digitals, they suck.

I've got a Fuji A210 that im happy with. (3.2mp, 3x optical) Cost me $150 at ritz.
Newegg.com had the newer version that has 4mp for $175 a while back.
If you want, I can email you a couple pics straight off the camera to give you an idea of what kind of image quality you get. PM me if you want a couple pics straight off the camera.

Here's a third for the A80. Although looking back I think I would rather have gotten a G3. It was a bit out of my price range though. Anyway, the full manual controls on the 80 beat the dumbed down feel of a lot of other cameras out there (cough cough, kodak).

What is a G3? I'm in the market for a camera this week and I want to spend about $165.

you'll never regret it, it's a bit $$$$, BUT, the video images are awesome, the zoom is fabulous, and the image quality is incomparable.

Why I'm waiting for the Minolta Maxxum Digital that's supposed to be out in November... so I can use my existing SLR lens.

The only bargains are the outgoing models. Most brands have their fans.
What he said, anything less (like the A80) and you are really moving "downmarket"

Expensive ones have them, cheap ones don't...
The mid-line cameras have like 3-4x optical zoom, more expensive ones have higher, like 10x optical.
My Fuji A340 has 3x optical, works very good for what I'm going to use it for...
