I don't buy this, but out of curiosity, I'll ask anyway. This guy told me the other day that if you gap platinum plugs with a feeler gauge, you will ruin the electrode. Is there even a scrap of truth to this?

20k miles later, I have shown no signs of "ruined plugs".....

40k and the plugs are still going.
Ask your brilliant friend how he gaps his platinum plugs.

I guess it could happen, but it would take an extremely inept person to mess them up. You would just about need to take a hammer and chisel to the plug to do that kind of damage.

As I thought. Thanks. By the way, it wasn't a friend of mine, it was a customer. The only reason I thought I might post this is that I have about 20k on my Autolite double platinum plugs (APPwhatevers, I don't feel like going to the shed to get #s right now), and I am noticing very slight rough idle. The only time I notice this is when I am cruising in first at no throttle, as in traffic. I also replaced the wires at the same time as the plugs, with some Motorcraft (not Ford Racing) 8mm wires.

Feeler gauges are the only thing you should use.
Those POS gapper disc are garbage! They are not worth the metal they are stamped from.
The only thing I could possibly state to the contrary is plugs like the POS Bosch +2 or +4 style.
Otherwise you gap EVERY plug and YES no matter even if they say they are pre-gapped.

Amen! My APPs that were supposedly pre-gapped, were all off.
You mentioned you had Ford Racing wires....and you are having a rough idle problem....not making assumptions, but check the wires.
