Pull the pan off the SVT motor and check it out, perform a compression test. If it checks out drop it in.

How do you do a compression test on a engine with it outside of the can and non running

The engine does not need to be running, in fact the common common compression test with a pressure gauge is done with the engine off. You do, however, need to be able to crank the engine in the normal manner with the starter. I would think this would usually be very difficult if the engine is out of the car.

If he had the trans he could just put 12 volts across the starter and test away. It would be kinda funny seeing someone testing the motor trans outta the car like this and haveit jumping and bucking from a hanging engine stand....for some odd reason I keep picturing that scenario

you wouldn't need the pcm to get it to crank? i don't see why you would need the trans, just the starter...
