Alternator just died on my 99CSVT. I cant even fit my hands around the alternator to change it. Does it have to be removed from underneath the car? I imagine a new or rebuilt alternator is pretty expenisve alone, then having to pay a mechanic a lot for labor. I'm sure this is an all day project. I did a search but didn't come up with much. Thanks for any help.

I did mine on my car (contour 99 V6) and it takes about 3 hours. You have to do it from underneath the car, don't even think doing it from top. And i did on a lift where i workso it's "easier".

Contour 99 MTX V6 fully loaded, stock with 110000km. Illuminated sunroof switch. About to do the mystique rear dome light conversion with eyeball dome light.

91K Miles. I've done a lot of freeway driving which is 3.5K RPMs or higher, I think because of how these cars are geared, running higher RPMS wears these alternators out much quicker. This is the first real problem I've had with the car.

I am not sure about that, I have been running my 95 Mystique lately with nothing but highway miles on the original alternator and have had no issues

you can pick one up from a junk yard for around $40, that is what I did when my father found that our second 99, my car, had a cracked alternator housing

as I am sure the faaq says you can get the alternator out by removing the tie rod end and using extentions to get to the bolts and then work the alternator out, that is the easiest way compaired to what the Ford manual says

I dont think your 95 Mistique is geared like the SVTs...i turn 4,000 RPMs on the freeway...thats a lot of constant high rev'ing, extra wear on the alternator, right?

Don't even get me going on these Duratec Alternators! I had to replace mine 4 times! 1st time-original wore out, 2nd-defective, 3rd-defective, 4th-defective! what the hell, the defective ones lasted a month or so before they went! On the bright side I have it down to about an hour on my Duratec 5 speed.

I always dropped the rear frame mounts and lowered the frame about 2 inches (just enough where nothing else has to be unhooked and you can still fit your hands through). Oh yeah that 1 hour change is in the shop on the hoist, perks of working at a garage.

What brand did you get, what auto part store? I don't want to have to do this job more than once.
