About a month ago my head gasket blew and I did the job myself. Had the head machined and had them do a valve job along with new stem seals. Well, ever since then, when I start the car when it's cold it gives off a puff of white smoke, like I said, it only does it on start-up when it's cold. Also the lifters are really loud when the engine is cold, and they make alot of noise for about 10 to 15 minutes then they quiet down some but not all the way. I know one reason for that could be that when I took the head off for replacement of the head gasket the lifters didn't get placed back in their same hole they came out of, the guy helping me didn't know anything and he just flipped the head over and the lifters just went everywhere and I didn't know where each one went. I know the Haynes manual says that if you don't put them in the same spot that it will increase the rate of wear to the lifter, but could that cause them to tap? Also something else I noticed that in the bore where the lifters are that there is a tiny hole there, i'm guessing it's for oil to travel through to the lifters...and the lifters also have a hole, when I put them back in I lined them up as best I could and dropped the lifters in. The manual didn't mention anything about that so I assumed that they go lined up, does anyone know for sure or not? Anyone with experience or that has the same problem please chime in, the noise is driving me crazy. Thanks in advance.

check the valve clearances, when you mismatched the lifters you may have messed up the clearances

Does anyone know how to check the clearances?

the lifters do not lift, the rocker arm is under constant tension by the camshaft and use the lifter as a focal point.

the noise and oil is probly from bad valve guides and/or damaged seals.

you say you Had the head machined do you mean they decked the surface?

if so ford say if the head is warped by a few thousands of a inch to toss it and get a new one and do not the surface, this can cause a change in cam timing and maby valve piston interference

Yes, what I did is i put some 10W-30 in a small container and as I was putting the lifters in, I would dip them in the oil and coat them really well before I put them in their bores. I followed the directions of the Haynes manual.

As to the other reply, you are talking about rocker arms, there are none. The camshafts sits directly over the lifters. When I say that the head was taken to a machine shop...What they did is pressure check the head to see if it was warped. They said it was slightly warped so they machined the mating surface. Also, they did a "valve job" and installed new valve seals and removed the carbon build up from the ports and combustion chamber.

On a high mileage engine they should have checked for valve stem wear and offered to rebore the valve guides and fit oversize stem valves. A puff of smoke in the morning is usually the valve seals. Valve stem slop or incorrect seal installation can cause this.

Lifter clearance is measured with feeler guages at each cylinder while that cylinder is at TDC. A valve job would have to require resizing and replacement of the "buckets". The buckets set valve clearance and are bought in the specific thickness for each valve. If all valve clearances are off, I would say that the shop does not know how to do this car. They should fix the problem or use the money already spent towards a new head.
