I don't get one thing though - why putting in a rebuilt tranny costs less that repairing yours? Ain't it supposed to be the opposite - meaning that your particular problem might be fixed for less $$$, but in reality the shops that repair yours always charge you more than the places that put in an already rebuilt tranny.

I mean, why most of the places do not offer that kind of service as NJrebuilt - just always having some rebuilt trannies in stock in putting 'em in every customer's car and then repairing yours and selling it to the next customer?

well , i believe in modding it while its out, so i would have it upgraded. if it failed the first time, make it better and hopefully (the ultimate goal behind this way of thinking) is make it last longer. my lexus has a good 100K left in it before i have to worry about that though *knock on wood* the way i drive ATX's maybe longer. i drive 5 speeds fast, autos are cruisers.

this is all my opinion BTW.

So should I take the $1,500 for complete job or risk going to another shop? Time is crucial 'cause I can't live w/o my car.
By "risking" I mean going for the specific estimate - and though one can refuse the service if the cost seems way too high - in reality when my ride will be in shop, I will have to leave it there. The chance is here that the problem will come down to a lesser cost if some parts of my tranny are still usuable - but then again the reality is that every tranny repair comes usually to a total higher than $1,500.

*lost* *confused*

i would shop around, i know you really probably cant afford to do that for personal reasons.

remember cheapest isnt usually the best. neither is rebuilt. it will be useing some of the old parts from your trans, so what happens when those fail?? unless you buy a rebuilt non #'s matching Trans and drop it in. then you are looking into the tune of $1100 +install. install shouldnt take more than a day i wouldnt think. if they say it does, look around some more but dont discount them just yet.

if they say it will take more than 3 days (for any reason except the shop is full) then run.

but i dont have alot of exp. with trans shops. if you want yours rebuilt, it will take longer possibly wont last as long because they wont replace all the parts, only the ones that appeart to be worn.

with a trans that is rebuilt when the mechanic gets is for a core exchange or something, then it is usually FULLY rebuilt (or as close as possible) before it is resold.

When they say rebuilt.....I recommend to get a list of what they are rebuilding or replacing........a minimum list would be:

torque converter
bearings
clutches and steels
all seals
I would replace direct/cluch housing it comes with new bushings which is VERY critcal...afermarket is about 70 dollars... Don't go to ford
Solenoid pack
shift correction kit for valve body.
new server cover and piston
tss

Bob

RG,

Don't let me get into this...

Make sure they are rebuilding YOUR transmission.

There is not only a difference between years, but there are differences between the Zetec and the Duratec.

The quote you got from him is a LOWBALL quote.
Most shop do this to get your attention and business.
When you car is on the lift, you'll find out how much the job REALLY is...
This is the WRONG time to find out.

R&R labor on the CD4E in any flavor of the Contique is $700+.
Add this to the $1,195 transmission they quoted you and it won't add up.

Either drop it yourself and do the work yourself,
or have them fess up to the numbers
and let them rebuild YOUR CD4E.

Don't let them get you any other way... TRUST ME...

Well, there's something else about this $1,500 place - it's about 1 hour drive from my place and by no means I wanna get stuck in the middle of nowhere. It's interesting what ya mention in your price breakdown - 'cause my neighborhood shop actually quoted $1,850, which is almost exactly the same price as yours. Well, I guess I am not going for the "cheap" $1,500 job now, do I? Daym, it's not that I have an unlimited amount of money now, my Thursday paycheck is gonna be like $1,800 or $1,900 but I gotta bills to pay too.
