Oh - and we early contours almost never break our differentials either. According to Terry the earlier MTX's didn't get the exploding diffs common to the 98 models
Hahaha, right.
Almost never - I personally don't know of a single pre-98 that blew there diff. Lots of syncro probs though. From the really old archives:

Feel free to call HMS ,616-874-1148.We have early, stronger 'stock' difs,Quaife ,can also repair gear cases if you have holes etc...
I couldn't find a more recent quote where he goes into the breakdown of which years got the "breakable" diffs, but I think it was just 98 and some of 99. Of course if you are trying to break it I bet you could - just way less common with the better diff's.

I'm sure it's just as easy to break a diff in a pre98. Maybe since they started making SVTs in 98, it became more apparent that they break fairly easy.

No.
I'm like 90% sure the 98 diffs are a weaker part (according to Terry) - I'll dig up the post.
Since tranny/diffs are rated by tq capacity and the SVT doesnt have any/much more tq than an SE depending on E0 or E1, you must be saying that SVT drivers abuse there trannys more?
-edit-
having no luck finding the post - but I know it exists, still looking.....

Close - but not the post I was looking for: Quote:
Terry Haines FCO Staff Join Date: Nov 2002 Posts: 2,928 Early rod shifts are a better box.In almost 2 years I've only had 2 or 3 thru the shop for any type of repair.Down side is the short shifter setup cannot be used (B&M0 and the linkage is sensitive to engine roll so the mounts have to be in tip top condition.Going from cable to rod takes a fair number of parts & mods. The rod box also has all the selectors in the bottom of the trans and has almost zero wear to the parts as they are always in oil......

That doesn't say anything about the differential. And the SVT does have a little bit more torque and yes the drivers do abuse them more.

Okay - this is turning stupid and I can't find Terry's original post. A couple of things for my final words:
Quote:
In almost 2 years I've only had 2 or 3 thru the shop for any type of repair
E0 tq vs SE tq
Quote:
SVT Torque 165 lb./ft. @ 5625 RPM SE Torque 165 lb./ft. @ 4250 RPM
So like I said, none to a little more depending on E0 or E1.
As for driver abuse - I don't think everyone drives like Demon

As for driver abuse. Think for a second. It's like a srt4 vs. regular neon, which one do you think gets driven harder. A lotta people are like Demon, except worse because a lotta people don't recognize what all that wheel hop is doing.
As for what Terry has had through his shop, that's just what Terry has happened to have through his shop.

I think driver abuse has little to do with it. Just because it has an SVT badge on it doesnt make it an abused car.
Like Scott said, has ANYONE had a pre-98 blow their diff? There are a heck of alot more pre-98 cars out there than SVT's too, yet no diff failures.
Just adding my 0.02

And a LOT more grandmas driving pre-98s.. No not every Contour owner is on CEG believe it or not.. And not every SVT owner knows about CEG.. There are going to be 50 year old guys driving SVTs and not breaking anything, but the "majority" of SVT drivers are going to abuse the car, such as myself, and of the 5 million pre 98s, a majority of these people are probably small family people using their car to drive to work and back, not to take to the drag strip..

Not with 5 speeds and V6's!
I assume if someone went out of there way to order a V6 Contour with an MTX they had to be just as big of a car nut as someone who bought an SVT. Remember from 95-98 there were no SVT's - so all the "SVT-like" drivers were buying V6/MTX combos, and not breaking them to boot
