I read on someone's post to leave coolant cap off while running engine, to get bubbles out of the system.. the FAQ was a bit confusing it didnt' say anything of that and also said to use full power coolant rather than 50% - possibly because flushing with water leaves 50% water trapped in system somewhere?
The ford helms manual doesn't say anything about getting rid of bubbles..

Any tips? and how-to? I remember on my old car i did so with radiator cap off where coolant does flow through continuously but i don't know if it'll work for the svt if it's leaving resovoir cap off?
maybe i just missed the rad. cap...

newbie, just hoping to get some guidance. couldnt' find in search. my idle's a bit rough now after changing thermostat..so i figure there's some air in system.
thanks!

i beleive the guide ment was do not use the 50/50 pre mixed coolant.

I have heard mixed feeling abouti t, and that its better to mix your own, but i have never used it directly.

The airbubble thing, im not sure about, but what we did when i did the motor swap was after we filled it up, we started the car andfilled the resivoir if it went dow..now it sits at the max line with no problmes, and no air bubbles showed up.

If you had an air pocket coolant should be puking out the
resivor or it would "burp" itself out

and your coolant level would be lower...

The T-stat and or air bubble shouldnt affect the idle.

You can run the car for 20 minutes without the reservoir cap off to burp the system.
It's not necessary, as on the T-stat there's a little hole with a loose piece of metal in it, that helps to burp the system.

I've done the coolant flush from the rad drain plug. I found that 4 + liters of water are left in the engine.
You then add 4 liters of 100% pure antifreeze to the reservoir tank.
Once the car has run for a bit, the two will mix and you'll get a close 50/50 mix.
Then just top up as needed, either 50/50 or 100% anitfreeze, depending how much you put in the first time.

Idle could be rough due to the fact you left something unplugged or isn't on right.

Correct.

Actually you just need it to warm up and open the thermostat so the coolant flows through the system.

Also have the heat on so it cycles through those lines and the heater core as well. (just like when you flush the system)

I'm pretty sure the coolant always runs through the heater core in the Contour. The same goes for most anything built after the early 90's. This helps the heater core not corrode due to sitting water. If anything, running the heater will make the thermostat open up later.

All the more reason I use a flushing tee. After a power backflush with a garden hose I leave the cap off the tee and pour a gallon of antifreeze in through the reservoir tank. Air and water escape out the tee. I put the cap back on when I see antifreeze start to flow out the tee.

There still might be a little air in the system but a heck of a lot less than if I didn't bleed it off through the tee.

this is great, so much helpful information.

i love this car i just bought though ive spent a lot of time doing overdue maintenance work, but this forum is so helpful you can't even explain since i refuse to spend money at dealer. what we'd do without these car interest forums.. gotta love em.

thanks a bunch guys.
i get it now, esp with chongo's comment how 4liters are left in engine, which makes sense why faq says to put in 100% coolant that is not mixed - i'll put in a gal of full antifreeze and then use mixed when i bleed air out of system.
