The latest fashion in the Twin Cities metro is government thinking they know more about how people manage their private property than the owners do.

Bloomington (a large suburb) and Minneapolis have passed smoking bans for bars and restaurants while a restaurant ban is being considered for Ramsey County and St. Paul (which is in Ramsey County).

This is another case of the government thinking they know more than the free markets and makes me want to light up (I don't smoke) just to protest.

Let the customers and workers decide where they want to work and hang out. If there is such a demand for non-smoking venues, the market should have already determined that by offering more smoke free places. I am not seeing any groundswell of pent up demand for requiring all places to be smoke free, and I resent government's intrusion in the property rights of individuals.

It will take some time to get used to. But its for the better and I like to smoke.

Cali is fine, but we do have better weather and almost all bars have smoking areas outside now. Lowering the health care costs for low-wage workers is a big plus.

Before NY passed the ban I had never been in a bar or a club that didn't allow smoking.

In case you didn't know NY passed a law (about 18 months ago I think) that for the most part banned smoking in resturants and bars. Despite all the naysayers commerce hasn't been affected. I enjoy being able to go out and have a good time with my friends and not smell like an ashtray when I get home.

You used to be able to smoke in stores, once that was banned, people didn't stop shopping. This law is the same way.

As far as the government knowing whats best in public places, they control alchohol do you think that is OK?

FWIW, I smoke cigars occasionally and I don't have a problem with not being able to smoke them in bars and whatnot.

I like the smoking bans in restaurants. Even though I occasionally smoke. They can still have smoking if they make a closed off section for it. Now no smoking in bars/clubs sucks. That's part of the reason a lotta people go to a bar/club.

And you know this at 17?

No one goes to a bar to smoke, they go there for the social interaction. Your in GA, just go outside to smoke, the weather is nice there.

Umm I'm 18. And been to bars at 17 though. And I don't mean people go to a bar just to smoke. I mean it's part of the atmosphere and I know MANY people that smoke only when they're out at bars and such. But that's just in Georgia I reckon.

99% of the time people start smoking socialy and continue because they are bored. IE it's something to kill time doing, especially when driving.

Smoking is a habit of the weak and stupid.

Andy W. The problem with America is stupidity. I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

there's been a smoking ban in Boston for almost 2 year. a lot of complaining initially, but it's just a part of life now. a few months ago the entire state went smokeless. i am much happier for it.

I don't think it's a matter of govt vs. free market, I think it's a matter of "I chose not to smoke, please don't make that decision for me by smoking aroud me."
