Here is what MSoft has to say about it:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=842242
Here is a brief list of programs (games only) that SP2 crashes out with:
Age of Empires II: Age of Kings
Chess Advantage III: Lego Chess
Combat Flight Simulator 3
Command & Conquer: Generals
Command & Conquer: Generals Zero Hour
Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2
Conflict: Desert Storm
Dead Man's Hand
Earth & Beyond
Elite Forces Vietnam: Special Assignment 2
Freedom Force
Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne
Medieval Total War
Midnight Outlaw: Illegal Street Drag
Moto Racer
NASCAR Racing 2003
NBA Live 2000
Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2
Roller Coaster Factory
Scrabble
Serious Sam: The Second Encounter
SimCity 4
Star Trek: Starfleet Command III
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Starcraft
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield
Tribes 2
Unreal II
Unreal Tournament 2003
Unreal Tournament Game of the Year Edition
Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos Collector's Edition
So like I said, if security is an issue for you then it might be a worthwile update. If you play any of the games listed, and other non-gaming programs that aren't listed, you will have problems.
Hell, where my brother works they were installing SP2 on some 1ghz machines and 3 out of 5 wouldn't boot and needed a new installation because even rescue didn't help...

i upgraded on the 17th on four comps... been running great. in fact sp2 and directx 9c work well together solved some graphics issues with my old graphics card (now on my record tv comp) Now games play beautiful. the graphics card used to crap out with directx 9 or higher... now works perfect!
also am also using nero, no problems whatso ever. Since microsoft has publically released sp2 they aren't having the install 3-5 comps don't work anymore problem. thats been fixed, still rare occasions i am sure it still happens. I have four of my own comps, and 5 others that i have installed sp2 on... still no problems perfect install everytime. so 0 of 9 for me! and tomorrow when I fix a friends and load it on my laptop that will be 11 comps.

i must make a correction to my posts..........it seems my wireless connection takes longer to get up and running. twice i have had to make/fix the connection. the problem is irritating enough that should it continue i may just get rid of sp2. maybe.

my wireless connection on my laptop and my desktop computer doesn't seem slower. IE seems a bit slower, but I fixed that by downloading firefox, which seems to open up just as quick.

For you users who work with PCs alot, did anyone notice that sometime either yesterday or today, Microsoft removed SP2 from the Windows Update site as a Critical Update? Kinda funny how it was there and now its gone? I think Microsoft realized some of the problems its giving and are try to work some of the bugs out of it, again.

i just thought i would tell you guys that sp2 fixed a dns problem we were having on the domain in class. we could not connect for some reason and the prof said it was due to a dns problem. for kicks we installed sp2 and all of a sudden we could connect to the domain. go figure.

I have autoupdate on, and I was hoping that it didn't download SP2. My roommate this morning downloaded it and now his IE won't work, and some programs aren't working. Is there a way to switch back to SP1 or tell if I already have downloaded SP2? Sorry for my computer illiteracy.
thanks, Paul

I ordered the CD to install it (since I'm using a GPRS dial up connection thru my cell), and right from the start was having problems, took me 3 times to get it to finish installing.
Then on boot up, all kinds of crazy errors, my antivirus files were messed up (and wouldn't let me uninstall it, so had to manually remove), just a bunch of weird stuff.
All those problems have seemed to work themselves out, though. Haven't tried any games yet, but I do notice that it boots up slower. I used to never see the white bar at the bottom on load up, and the graphic XP loading page used to only show up for a split second.
Oh well, so far hasn't done anything weird, but if you do install it, then uninstall it (it rolled back the install the first 2 times) it will tell you "You have uninstalled Service Pack 2, your Windows XP may not work properly now" or something similar to that... so BE CAREFUL with this.

there are a couple of ways to do this, we tried both this past week in class and both worked fine. one way is if you have system restore turned on then you can simply restore to a date prior to the sp2 install. i think that system restore is turned on by default and that sp2 will create a system restore point automatically, iirc. for this method go to start/all programs/accessories/system tools/system restore. choose "restore my computer to a an earlier time". choose a date and let your comp do its thing.
alternately
you can go to start/control panel/add or remove programs and scroll down until you see "windows xp service pack 2". click this and choose remove and let the computer do its thing.
like i said, in class we used both methods and they both worked. the nice thing about system restore is that it will return your computer to a point where the computer worked fine.
oh yeah, to see which service pack you have right click my computer/go to properties/ and read the window that comes up it will tell you which version of xp you have
