99 Ford Countour 2.0 temp normale on highway but overheats on streets. Notice cooling fan wasnt kicking on. I have a Hayes manuel but it has the wrong diagram for the engine relay. Does anyone know which relays for the cooling fan are the high and low ?

the Sending unit in the Zetec's are kind of wierd... MOST of them are telling you its at the top of the heat spectrum when its really closer to the middle. Next chance you get, start your car up and let it idle and wait till it goes to about the "L" on normal. and listen for the fan to kick on... if it does, then your sending unit is telling you the wrong reading in the cluster. if the temp continues to rise and the fan does not kick on... Then I would say replace your Thermostat.. its pretty easy.

Edit: does turning the AC or Defroster on turn on the fan? and does it make the temp stay down?

The low speed fan resistor is a common failure.

I recall it having been discussed in the past. Perhaps you can locate these discussions by searching around.

I have the diagram of the electrical cooling system for a contour 99 2.0 with A/C and the battery junction box pictures that shows you exactly where are your two relay and the resistor but i don't know how to send pictures. So e-mail me if you want the information or tell me how to post them.

Nic.

Would a 96 zetec also have this sending unit.If so where would it be located?I dont want to hijack this post but I have the same problem. My guage goes all the way to the L then the fan kicks in and it just stays there it doesnt go down.I was thinking it could be the coolant temp sensor.

It's near the bottom of the radiator, on the driver's side corner, facing toward the engine. You can trace it by locating the motor on the cooling fan, and then following the wires backward.

Both cars have 180* thermostats. The temp gauge points straight up BUT every so often (Small hill) the needle rockets towards hot. The engine coolant as not reached the fan on temp(fairly high). As a test I turn on the A/C(starts the cooling fan automaticly) and I observe the temp needle as it returns to straight up. SO....everything is operating according to Ford spec. Sometime one has to just look away....
