I dig other suggestions, particularly the M5, but as I said before the cars listed are the only choices. I can't comment further on the cost issue, but lets just say it's irrelevant in this case; it will not be a deciding factor at all.
Thanks for all of the comments and forsight!

a loaded '03 Maxima 6spd would be the least expensive of all the cars on your list, provide the same or more room, and perform better than all except for the RX8. you're selling yourself short by not considering the Max.

I just picked up an 01 LS 8 fully loaded with 50k on it for 18k. It is just like new, not a mark on it. So far I'm very happy with it.

If she has to drive in the snow forget the LS. (stability control is overrated in the snow) Long term reliability isn't great in my experience. At 50,000 miles they fall apart.
The X-type will be cramped even for young kids and is a bit overpriced.
The S80 is probably your best bet. They had a teething problems but it seems they have cleared that up. You won't find anything safer. I would steer away from the T6. The torque steer can be pretty bad and in most situations the car isn't that fast. The AWD is nice. Its a peppy engine with a good awd system. I have driven the s60 awd a fair amount with this combo and it is really good all round. The s80 is a great long distance cruiser and gets good gas mileage if you don't push it too much. Opt for the surround sound system. Its sounds amazing, one of the best stock systems out. Also the backrest release is a good way to piss your kids off.

I picked the Jag. AWD for the MI winters.
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

Jag's giving pricing incentives, so that would be the best bet IMO . . . esp if it's a family car, etc.
I voted for the RX-8 anyways because it's a "4dr" sport car that's pretty fun. . .but in all honesty, the lack of torque would make tooling around with the family a bit drab and slow. . .

Werd! Slightly used 540 before they fugged up the styling!
I've gotten used to the new styling now and quite frankly, its not that bad. The new M5 though

But seriously, I think I'd go with the LS if it were me.
