You are both right, Chez just didn't state a total for both heads. $600 per head x 2 heads = $1200.

I was talking about way less than $1400. I could do it for $300-$400 a head including a mild valve job. For a little more could even throw in a thinner copper head gasket. I am looking for one to do now without putting my car out of commission while I do it. I would probably have to do a core type thing with others in order not to have your cars out of commission for too long.

So, what are the downsides? Does this reduce the life of the engine in any way? What kind of gains would an SVT, which already has this done to some extent, expect to see for that price?

I usually charge $650 for SHO heads(pair) and I am pretty sure that the Contour SVT would be about the same. These are hand ported heads with a three angle valve job. There is a lot of room to port on the contour head. When I get the heads and cams back from the cam grinder I am getting them ported for my customer. Let me know if anyone is interested. www.iptech.tv

Port & Polish would show upper RPM gains. Mainly HP due to better breathing. TQ may drop a little, but negligable.
Expect to pick up noticeable power above 4000-4500RPM.
The SVT of course would benefit much better then a Std Duratec because of it's better breathing components and CR.
This is an good option when getting your heads done. (Like during a 3L swap or engine rebuild) I personally wouldn't pull my heads just to port & polish them. That's fairly expensive Bang for your buck.
