Question:
Today I was driving along at 65-70 mph and the tranny stared downshifting, then upshift, then downshift, etc.
Took it to a tranny place and they could not find anything wrong with it (no codes, etc.)
The Tranny guy said it could be water in the gas (we just went through Hurricane Charlie in O-Town!) so I got some Gas Dryer and put it in.
It hasn't done it since.
Thoughts?

Could also be a bad battery connection, ground and anything of the like. Also, a bad MLP Sensor (range sensor) will do this as well.
Did your overdrive light flash during the bad shifting episode? If so, then I would bet on the sensor, if not and the troubles return, start checking all your connections as listed above. Also, be sure to check all connections for signs that water might have made it into the connector.

Thanx. No overdrive light, so probably not the sensor.
What is good to use to clean / dry out the connectors?

Okay... Today I cleaned all the connectors and took it out for a test drive. Got up to about 30 MPH and punched it. It went nuts. Hard shifting up and down. Then the O/D light started flashing. I didn't know you had to leave it running to read the codes, so I haven't gotten them yet.
Now I'm thinking bad sensor(s). Where should I start? TSS?
What about the magnet issue?
Help!

You will probably have to take it to a shop to actually get the codes because, as far as I know, Autozone's code readers will only read codes in the KOEO (key on, engine off) state. They will have to have the scanner pluged in during a test drive.
Before you start throwing parts at it, get the code read. This could be caused by yes, a bad senor, or also a host of other things as well.

I have a reader that plugs into my laptop... I'll just have to take it out for a ride with the laptop.

You transmission will always shift hard when the O/D light blinks. The reason is because line pressure is raised in all types of driving and the tranny enters a fail-safe mode if you want to call it that.

Okay, I took it out with the ODB II on it last night. Drove the crap out of it. Downshifted manually, everything. Could not get it to do it. I must have to be hot. I'm going to try again tonight.
ARGH!

That only means that your car knows that you are trying to find out what's wrong. That's all! Just be patient and it will tell you what you want to know. If not, then just ride around with the OBD-II connector connected to the port, because apparently the car enjoys it.
Sorry, just a little humor there.

I just drove all the way to work (36 miles / 45 min) and it was bucking like a bronco for a good portion of the way but never got the O/D light to flash. I am going to pull the TSS tonight and order a replacement. I am worried it's going to tear itself apart.
