Thanks for all the kind words , everyone . It certainly helps . Thanks for the pic , Plato . I'll keep it around for sure . Parkedcar - I remember when you had to put your dog down . I remember thinking how I'd be sad as heck when it happened to me . I just didn't think it'd happen this soon . He was really more than a dog to us , he was like our child . We still have 2 cats , who are 16 & 13 . I figured we'd be saying goodbye to them long before Duke . Like I said , we're devistated . The cats are pacing the house waiting for their brother to come home ... it's strange . And to think , Duke was loving his freedoms here at our new house . At least he had a year to enjoy it . The house it too quiet without him . I keep expecting him to pop out from around the corner to see me walk down the steps .

It's gonna be a tough road , for sure . For now , I'm self-medicating to help me get through the night . Thanks again , I appreciate it .

BTW - the "rainbow bridge" poem was appreciated too . I'll keep that bookmarked so I can read it whenever I'm feeling blue ...

Geeeez, so sorry for your loss. You're right, they're like children. Last year we had to put down our Collie/Shepherd mix. He was 14. I'm not ashamed to say I wretched and cryed my eyes out that day afterwards. We all did. To our cat, Rex was his "mom"...they slept together. Took him 1 month to get over it. The pain will eventually die down. There will ALWAYS be the happy memories though. And as others have said previously, and you know too, you did the best, most unselfish thing for Duke....he's all better now.....

Sorry to hear about your loss. One of my first dogs (Yellow Lab) died in my arms and I still think about that and that has been 10 years now. I just got a 7 week old German Shep puppy when I went to TX a few weeks ago. I love those dogs!!!

That stinks. I know exactly how you fell. About a month ago my parents had to put our dog down. He was 18 and we had gotten him when I was 6. I am now 21. He had a good life, but the kidney failure he suffered in the end was too much for him. I will forever miss that dog. RIP Bear.

I am so sorry to hear this! I agree you did the right thing, but that doesn't make the loss any easier.

I remember my childhood dog, Buffy... who was far better to me than I ever deserved.

You're right , James . Sometimes doing the RIGHT thing isn't always the EASIEST thing .

SVT24 - that's a really good-looking Shep ya got there . I can remember when Duke was just a clumsy little character . I don't have a lot of pictures of him growing up , unfortunately . It's just one of those things you take for granted , I guess ... that he'll always be there , or I'll take his picture tomorrow . Until tomorrow comes & he's not there . I did , however come across THIS PICTURE of him at about 4 months old . You can see how much darker he was when we first got him . He was a cutie !

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one missing his buddy . Sorry to hear 'bout everyone elses losses through the years ...
